"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle": Let's Learn About Some Easy Ways to Recycle

What's Up?

Implementing the 3 R's can be easy, and fun.  For example, recycling does not have be time consuming or hard.  In fact it can fun and an easy add on to your daily routine.

Plus there are ways to make money for your school, church, or you and your family by recycling.

Let's learn some basics today about Recycling and how we can fit it into our daily lives with ease.

What is Recycling?

Recycling turns materials that would otherwise be waste into valuable resources (definition per the EPA).

Process

The process of recycling includes

  1. Collecting recyclable materials (curbside, drop-off center, or deposit/refund centers)
  2. Sorting them into categories (Usually done by a MRF (Material Recovery Facility) and then sold on the market for the market price of that commodity.)
  3. Processing them into new fibers such as paper, and glass.
  4. Manufacturing the raw materials into a new product.
  5. Purchasing the product with recycled material.

What to Recycle

Each county, township, or city has their own list of what they recycle and how they want to collect it.  Consult with your local area government on what they recycle.

Fun Ways To Recycle

Our recommendation would be to make it fun, or even a family event.

Suggestions:

  • Have your kids decorate the recycling bins
  • Place the cans in easy distance to the regular trash.
  • If you live in area that has deposit/refund for cans, try saving the money that the you collect in a jar for special project or vacation.
  • Try out some free video games and activities related to recycling.
  • Play games with the containers.  Basketball with the cans, or bottles.  Give so many free chore points for each can or bottle they recycle.
